Pros

The pros of freelancing include that you can put as little or as much time as you like into your service, you get to work with people around the world, and, for the most part, you can set your own rates.

And, whether you’re new to freelancing or have been doing it for ages, essentially, you are getting paid to learn and hone your craft. Each job you do make you more proficient with your skills, creating more value for the next client that hires you, which is similar to a paid apprenticeship.

Cons

One of the cons of freelancing is that it can take some time to get your name known and your ratings up to the point where you can earn a respectable income. Additionally, some fields have so many freelancers that the competition can be intimidating; not to mention that you have to contend with others who are willing to undercut their prices in order to get the job.

For instance, a professional freelance writer can earn $1 per word or more by supplying content to businesses, but it isn’t uncommon to see a freelance writer offer to write 100 words for that same dollar. The quality may not be the same, but some clients will hire them regardless, sometimes making it harder for you to get the prices you ask for.

Another con is that you constantly have to sell yourself which takes a lot of effort and is uncomfortable for some people. Plus, it’s not uncommon to have clients push boundaries, putting you in a position where you have to stand up for yourself professionally and respectfully, no matter how much you want to tell them what you really think.

Earning Potential

Your earning potential as a freelancer depends on quite a few factors, some of which are how much time you do it, what your skill is, and how quickly you can turnaround a job. Therefore, some freelancers only make a couple of dollars a week doing it on the side and others earn a respectable six figure income freelancing their talents full-time.

A lot of freelancers start out part-time just to secure some experience and start to build their profiles before quitting their “day job” and risking not being able to make it financially. However, others jump right in and find a way to make it work, so how you do it is entirely up to you and how brave and courageous you are (and how big your safety net is, financially speaking).
